Proceedings of the GMP held at Coimbatore on 14th May, 2005

The GMP Workshop organized by FIHI was conducted at Hotel Surya International, Coimbatore on 14th May, 2005.

The Vice President of FIHI extended a formal welcome to all the participants and Resource Persons who attended the Workshop.

Prof. K.Ganesan, Adviser VHERDS briefly narrated the Concept behind formation of the Federation, its various objectives and the work so far done in the past on year.

Dr. Veluchamy, Director, Siddha Research, Chennai formally inaugurated the Workshop and emphasized the importance of strengthening the organization for achieving the objectives of FIHI.

Prof. Vimala Devi of Auro Pharma, Pondicherry initiated discussions on "the problems of Herbal Promotion and Indian Medicinal Industry".

After Tea break, Dr. Veluchamy made a presentation on "the Scope for the application of basic concept of Siddha System of Medicines contributing to GMP".

On completion of this technical session, an interactive Session was conducted to clarify the doubts raised by the participants of the Workshop.

In the afternoon session Dr. Sankara Subramaniam of Cholayil Pharmaceuticals made a presentation on "Quality Control in ISM Products".

Subsequently Dr.Dinesh Katoch, Deputy Adviser, Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi, made a brief presentation on "the Need and Support for Adoption of GMP".

Prof. E. Vadivel, Dean of Horticulture, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, Coimbatore explained "the role of ISM to substitute or supplement Allopathy treatment in day-to-day life".

Dr. Rajamani, Associate Professor, Department of Horticulture explained the various components of good agricultural practices which is closely affiliated to GMP. There was a brief inter-action after the closure of the afternoon technical sessions.

On completion of the Workshop sessions, Dr.Balachandra Kurup, Secretary of FIHI proposed vote of thanks.

Proceedings of the first Anniversary and Annual General Body Meeting of FIHI conducted on 15th May, 2005 at Hotel Surya International, Coimbatore

During the non-business session, Shri T.P.Radhakrishnan, General Secretary of VHERDS proposed Shri K. Bhanu to chair the session.

The Chairman at the outset briefly explained about the activities undertaken by FIHI during the first one year of its existence. The organization has 45 members as against the original targeted number of 100 members during the first year.

The Secretary Dr. Balachandra Kurup, in his presentation traced out the background and history of FIHI, conduct of the periodical meetings, publication of two Newsletters with the caption "Herbal Vision", communications to the Department of AYUSH and WHO on various issues facing the Herbal Industry as a whole. Several problems encountered by the industry have been brought to the notice of the Departments concerned. The task force members of FIHI had met the President of India on 1st April, 2004. FIHI, in coordination with VHERDS, organized a National Herbal Expo and Seminar in Delhi and a Rural Exhibition at Coimbatore.

The Secretary also presented the Income and Expenditure Account for the period ending 31st March, 2005. The excess receipt over expenditure for the period ending 31st March, 2005 is Rs.1,27,538/-. The organization has created Fixed Assets to the tune of Rs.27,900/- and the bank balance with the scheduled bank is Rs.1,12,688.22. The Report of the Secretary and the Income and Expenditure Account were approved by the members of  the  FIHI.

The next point of the Agenda was the election of Office Bearers and Committee Members.

Shri T.P.Radhakrishan, General Secretary of VHERDS was nominated as Election Officer to conduct the election of Office bearers and Committee Members of FIHI for the ensuing two years. Based on the nominations received, duly proposed and seconded by members, following Office Bearers and Committee Members were elected unanimously:

The forum approved the appointment of Auditors, R. Subramanian & Company for undertaking audit of accounts for the financial years 2005-06 and 2006-07

With regard to the change of name of organization from FIHI, it was agreed that subject to the approval of Government of India, Regional Director, Department of Company Affairs and the Director of Registration, the name of the organisation shall be changed as "Federation of Indian Medicinal and Natural Products Industry". (FIMNPI)

In the non-business session of the FIHI, the following persons offered felicitations:

Prof. Vimala Devi during her acceptance speech made a mention about the well-defined action programme of the Federation and the calendar of events to be finalized.

The Calendar of events for the year 2005 was finalized as follows:

1. E.C. Meeting once in two months
2. Annual General Body Meeting during May and November.
3. One Seminar / Exhibition per year
4. Meeting concerned Ministers for establishing central approval for the quality control lab
5. Seminar or Workshop at Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi and Pondicherry
6. Centralized lab for quality assurance and standardization of Indian Medicines
7.To become a certifying authority for export items recommending products to     Pharmexcil, Government of India.
8. Enter into a MOU between Pharmexcil and other countries.
9. To help small scale industries.

The Vice President, Shri K.Bhanu requested the participants to strengthen the Federation with the addition of more number of members besides conducting periodical training and education sessions and workshops on various subjects of academic interest to the Federation, apart from actively engaging in various activities in the welfare of the members.

AGENDA FOR THE FIRST EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING OF FIHI TO BE HELD AT PONDICHERRY ON 29TH JUNE, 2005

1.     Enrollment of additional members for FIHI
2.     Formation of a working group of scientists and technologists to protect Indian
         Herbal Industries.
3.    To design standards for the traditional preparations
4.    Identify an ISM Quality Assurance Lab
5.    Arriving at an understanding with PHARMAEXCIL regarding membership and the        status of the FIHI Members.
6.   Organizing workshops on GAP and GLP
7.   Organizing a meeting in different Departments/Ministries of the Government of India       dealing with ISM/Herbal products through the Central Medicinal Plants Board at Delhi       for coordination.
8.   Taking up taxation and other matters with concerned authorities
9.   INHEX 2005 at New Jersey, USA in August 19-21, 2005.
10. Any other subjects proposed by members


Supplementary Agenda

1. Measures to ensure inclusion of important Indian medicinal plants in the positive list
     of the potentially importing countries.
2. Reduction in the price for Gamma irradiation within Rs.10 per Kg. for Ayurvedic      products.
3. Evolution of certification mechanisms for internationally acceptable certificate like      WHO, GMP, Good Agricultural Practices, Good Storage Practices, NON-GMO, organic      farming etc.
4. Creation of a National library of primary phytochemical reference standards and cost      effective testing of herbal products.
5. Impetus to Patent cell to assist the exporters and fight Biopiracy.
